MRI creates precise scans of the heart and major blood vessels without radiation. It uses a large magnet and radio waves to take images. It is a safe and painless test. The scan usually takes 45mins-1hr.

You may need to hold your breath for a short time, but this is not painful and only lasts a few seconds. Some people find the scan noisy and feel closed in (claustrophobic). If you have this feeling, we can give you earplugs or a headset to reduce the noise. The technologist will be in another room controlling the scanner but will be able to see you and talk to you at all times via a window. There is also a call button you can use if necessary.

The results from a cardiac MRI scan will be sent to your doctor, who will share them with you. A radiologist, who is a doctor who specialises in interpreting MRI scans, will look at the results and check them against your medical history. They will discuss any abnormalities with you and explain the results.
Sometimes your doctor will want to do a follow-up exam to see how your condition is progressing. This will involve further tests, often using more views or a different imaging technique.
